Brook Drumm wins Wired.Com Fueling Innovation Contest

Thanks to the phenomenal support of our fans, backers, friends and supporters, Brook is the first winner of Wired.com and Mercedes-Benz’s Fueling Innovation contest!

The contest, designed to identify the top ten innovators who are paving engineering’s future, selected Brook in their first round for his invention: the Printrbot. Despite being stacked up against nine other exceptional inventors, the Printrbot received astonishing support and dedicated voting throughout the contest, especially on Kickstarter.com, where backers encouraged one another to vote and spread the word about 3D printing.  The result was that towards the end of the contest, Brook’s vote “fuel gauge” was literally off the chart.

As promised, the $2500 prize will go toward five Printrbot+ printers that will be donated to five schools. Stay updated for the contest announcement that will determine the lucky schools.

Congratulations to Brook on this distinguished recognition, and our sincerest thanks to everyone for voting.

Printrbot printer printing perfect Printrbot parts

Congratulations to Ian Stratford, the winner of this fine Printrbot LC (wood only) kit, for being the first to film his Printrbot printing another printer. Thank you to Ian for showing how the printrbot is the printer that keeps on printing, the creation that keeps on creating, and the gift that keeps on giving.

Happy printing!

Printrbot: Awesome Resolution Print

Credit where credit is due…. Brian Roe, an engineer and machinist, has one of the Printrbot betas…. and BOY! does it pay to have a guy on your team obsessed with quality! Check it out. So, here is your answer – for those wondering “But does this thing print in an acceptable resolution?” Yes, yes it does.

Printrbot Design Experiments

Since a photo of this version of the Printrbot was posted on the Flickr, I thought i would elaborate. This is proof that a 3D printer can be printed without using threaded rod for structural support. I will go ahead and finish out this version for fun – trying to get the vitamin (bolts, buts, washers) count down to a minimum. This mod alone drops the Printrbot’s final part count down by 34 parts! But for now, the sacrifice was too great. With some time to redesign, I can strengthen it…. but the print time for the 4 base parts is probably 4 hours – give or take.

The Printrbot jr. will be the real deal, though…. smaller without threaded rods and a much faster print time, but still really solid.
